Best legal recruiting firms (2026): who places attorneys, and how they get paid

Legal recruiting firms place associates, partners, and in-house counsel. The work splits into law-firm lateral hiring, partner moves with a book of business, and in-house or general-counsel search. Contract paralegals and legal staff are a different product, usually sold by a staffing firm.

Hiring a law firm to represent your company is a separate decision. That list is startup law firms. Retained search for non-legal leadership is on executive search firms.

How to choose a legal recruiter

A partner search and a third-year associate search should not go to the same process. Ask which of those the firm actually does, and whether your company or law firm will be off limits for their other searches.

  • Ask for recent placements in the practice area and city you are hiring.
  • Confirm the fee is paid by the employer, and whether the search is exclusive.
  • For a partner move, ask how they handle a portable book and conflicts.
  • Get the guarantee period in writing before the first candidate arrives.
  • If you need several contract lawyers, a staffing firm is usually faster than a retained search.

After the lawyer starts, the revenue system is a different job

OneGTM does not recruit attorneys and does not practice law. We build outbound, signal, and CRM systems for B2B teams.

If a legal hire is part of standing up a sales motion, the system those sellers use is the work on the outbound agency page.

  • A new sales hire has no scored account list.
  • The CRM cannot show which source produced a meeting.

Legal recruiting FAQ

What are the best legal recruiting firms?
For partner, associate, and in-house search in the US, Major, Lindsey & Africa, BCG Attorney Search, Lateral Link, Macrae, and Kinney Recruiting are specialist firms. Laurence Simons focuses on executive legal search. In the UK, SSQ, BCL Legal, and Taylor Root recruit private practice and in-house lawyers. Robert Half staffs contract attorneys and legal support. Placement fees are paid by the employer.
How much do legal recruiters charge?
Employers pay, and candidates generally do not. The percentage is not published by the firms on this list. Associate laterals are often contingency. Partner and general-counsel searches are often retained. Ask for the fee basis and the guarantee before you share an opening.
What is the difference between a legal recruiter and a startup law firm?
A legal recruiter finds lawyers to hire. A startup law firm represents the company on formation, financings, and commercial work. They are different vendors. Both lists are on this site.
Should I use a contingency recruiter for a general counsel?
A general counsel or chief legal officer search is usually retained, so one firm runs a confidential process. Major, Lindsey & Africa and Laurence Simons are built for that seat. Contingency is more common for associate laterals, where several firms can work the role.
Does OneGTM place attorneys?
No. OneGTM builds outbound and CRM systems. The firms on this page do legal recruiting.
