Company news monitoring for sales (2026): the tools we use, and how to turn a headline into a first line

Company news monitoring means watching the press, blogs, and announcements about your target accounts for events that change what they buy: a new executive, an acquisition, a product launch, a new office, a layoff, a lawsuit. For sales, a news event is the reason to write this week instead of next quarter, and the best source of a first line that is about them.

Below is how OneGTM monitors account news, then the news APIs for building your own feed and the alert tools reps can run themselves, with what each vendor publishes about price. For the wider set of triggers, see buying signal tools.

Key takeaways

  • We search news per account with Serper and Exa inside Deepline plays, and a model decides what counts.
  • Free options (Google Alerts, Google News RSS) are fine for a short account list and break at scale.
  • News APIs start at $25 a month (Perigon) and $90 a month (NewsAPI.ai). NewsAPI.org's free tier is for development only.
  • Most headlines are noise. Classify each one by event type before a rep sees it.
  • Use the event in the first line, then tie it to a problem the event creates.

How OneGTM monitors company news

Our plays run news searches through Serper and Exa on our own keys, then pass the results to a model that answers one question: did something happen at this company that matters to the buyer? For companies we do not know yet, a free lane reads funding and launch news from RSS feeds and Google News queries and resolves each story to a domain.

Serper

OneGTM uses this

Google search API with a news endpoint that returns recent headlines, sources, and dates for any query, such as a company name. Fast and cheap enough to run per account every week.

Best for: Cheap Google News results per account

Pricing: 2,500 free queries. Prepaid packs from $50 for 50,000 credits ($1.00 per 1,000) down to $0.30 per 1,000 at 12.5M. Credits expire after six months.

Exa

OneGTM uses this

Search API built for AI agents. It finds pages by meaning, returns full page contents, and has Monitors that rerun a search on a schedule and return only new results.

Best for: Finding news and blog posts that a keyword search misses

Pricing: $10 of free credit each month. Search $7 per 1,000 requests ($4 on lite and instant); contents $1 per 1,000 pages; Answer $5 per 1,000 requests; Monitors $15 per 1,000.

Deepline

OneGTM uses this

GTM data platform where our signal plays run on a schedule. News checks sit inside those plays: search per account, have a model classify the event, and write a first line only when the event is relevant.

Best for: Running news checks on every account without a rep reading headlines

Pricing: Pay as you go at $0.10 per credit with no platform fee.

News APIs for building your own feed

These index thousands of publishers and return structured articles you can filter by company, topic, and date. Built for developers and data teams.

News API with company and people entity tagging, story clustering, and saved monitors that watch a query for you.

Best for: Entity-tagged news with monitors at a low starting price

Pricing: Individual $25/month (personal use, 1,000 requests, 2 monitors); Startup $250/month (10,000 requests, 5 monitors, 3 years of history); Commercial $1,250/month. 10% off billed annually.

NewsAPI.ai (Event Registry)

News API that groups articles into events and tags them with entities, categories, and sentiment, with search across news and blogs.

Best for: Event-level news with entity and sentiment tags

Pricing: Free with 2,000 searches. 5K plan $90/month with the last 30 days of data. Larger plans through sales. Overage $0.015 per token.

NewsAPI.org

Simple headline and article search API. Returns article metadata and URLs, not full text, so you fetch the article yourself.

Best for: A plain article search API for a production app

Pricing: Developer free (100 requests a day, 24-hour delay, development only). Business $449/month; Advanced $1,749/month; Enterprise custom. 20% off billed yearly.

Pricing: Free for 100 API calls a month. Then $0.04 per credit with a $40 monthly minimum, falling to $0.002 at volume. Flat-file Enterprise access is custom.

Alerts and feeds for reps

These deliver news to a person by email, app, or dashboard. Good for a rep with a named account list. Hard to pipe into a sequencer at volume.

Google Alerts

Emails you new results for a query as they happen, daily, or weekly, filtered by source type, language, and region.

Best for: A rep watching a few dozen accounts for free

Google News RSS

Best for: A free feed for discovery queries such as launches in your niche

Pricing: Free.

Feedly

News reader whose Market Intelligence product adds AI feeds that track companies, trends, and events across news and blogs, with newsletters and an API on the higher plan.

Media monitoring and social listening tool that tracks a brand or company name across news, blogs, and social networks, with sentiment and reporting.

Best for: Monitoring a handful of company names across news and social

Pricing: Custom pricing; the plan price was not shown on the pricing page when we checked. Annual billing gives two months free.

Prices are from each vendor's site as of October 2026 and change often, so check before you buy. This is an opinionated list, not a paid ranking. Some links are referral links that may earn us a credit; that never changes what you pay or who makes the list.

Which company news is worth acting on

Most news about a company is useless to a seller: earnings recaps, award lists, a quote in an industry roundup. A small set of events changes what the company buys, and those are the ones to watch for.

Decide in advance which events matter for your product and ignore the rest. A security vendor cares about a breach and a new CISO. A recruiting firm cares about expansion and a new office. A data vendor cares about an acquisition, because two CRMs now have to merge.

  • New executive in your buyer's function. See job change tracking.
  • Funding, acquisition, or merger. See funding data.
  • Product launch, new market, or new office.
  • Layoffs or restructuring, which kill some deals and create others.
  • Regulatory action, lawsuit, or breach in your category.

Cutting the noise

Keyword alerts on company names drown reps. Common names match other companies, syndicated press releases repeat the same story twenty times, and stock sites publish an automated article every time the share price moves.

The fix is a classification step. Send each headline and snippet to a model with your list of event types and a strict rule: return the event type, or none. Drop finance aggregators and social sites by domain before the model sees anything. Then dedupe by company and event, keeping the earliest date.

  • Search with the company name plus the domain or a distinguishing word.
  • Block stock and aggregator domains outright.
  • Classify into a fixed list of event types, with none as the default.
  • Require the story to name the company in the headline or first paragraph.
  • Keep one row per company and event, dated by the earliest source.

How to use company news in outbound

Here is the play. Once a week, run a news search per target account through Serper or Exa, limited to the last 14 days. Pass the results through the classifier above. When an event matches your list, find the person the event affects most, such as the new VP or the leader of the team that is expanding, and write a first line that names the event and the problem it creates for them.

The line has to show you read the story. Opening with a headline anyone could paste looks automated. Opening with what the event means for their week does not: a new office in Austin means hiring 40 people in a new market. Then give one reason your product helps with that, and a small ask. Push the lead into a sequence the same day, since news goes stale in two to three weeks.

  • Cadence: weekly per account, daily for your top 100.
  • Window: last 14 days, and stop referencing the event after 30.
  • Who: the person whose job the event changes.
  • First line: the consequence of the event, in one sentence.
  • Log the event on the CRM record so the next rep does not reuse it.

When to get help with news signals

Pulling headlines costs a few dollars. The work is deciding which events matter, filtering the noise, matching each story to the right company and person, and writing lines that read like a human wrote them.

OneGTM builds news plays on Serper, Exa, and Deepline that search your accounts, classify the events, find the right person, and push them to Instantly or HeyReach. You own the data and the workflows.

  • Your reps get Google Alerts nobody reads.
  • You want news events to start sequences without manual research.
  • Your news feed matches the wrong companies or repeats the same story.
  • You want first lines that reference real events at scale.

Company news monitoring FAQ

What is the best company news monitoring tool for sales?
For a rep with a short account list, Google Alerts or Owler is enough. For a team that wants news to trigger outreach, a news API such as Perigon, NewsAPI.ai, or Serper's news endpoint plus a classification step works better. OneGTM uses Serper and Exa inside Deepline plays.
How much does a news API cost?
Serper charges about $1 per 1,000 queries, Perigon starts at $25 a month, and NewsAPI.ai has a free tier and a 5K plan at $90 a month. NewsAPI.org's Business plan is $449 a month, and its free Developer plan is for development only.
Is Google Alerts good enough for sales?
Google Alerts is good enough for one rep watching a few dozen accounts. It has no API, no event classification, and no way to push results into a CRM or sequencer, so teams outgrow it once they watch hundreds of accounts.
Which company news events are buying signals?
New executives in your buyer's function, funding, acquisitions, product launches, new markets or offices, layoffs and restructuring, and regulatory or security events in your category. Most other coverage, such as earnings recaps and award lists, is noise for a seller.
How do I stop news alerts from matching the wrong company?
Search with the company name plus its domain or a distinguishing word, block stock and aggregator sites, and require the story to name the company in the headline or first paragraph. A model classification step then drops anything that is not a real event at that company.
Is Owler still available?
Yes. Owler still offers a free Community plan that follows up to 5 companies and a Pro plan at $468 a year, with Enterprise plans adding API access and CRM integrations.
How do I reference company news in a cold email?
Name the event, then say what it means for the reader in one sentence, such as the hiring a new office requires. Avoid pasting the headline and avoid generic congratulations. Send within two weeks of the story, and stop referencing it after about a month.
