# Local business data (2026): how we build SMB lead lists, and the sources compared

Local business data is the list of every plumber, gym, dental office or restaurant in a set of towns, with an address, phone, website and ideally the owner's name and email. LinkedIn and the usual B2B databases miss most of these businesses. The owner of a three-truck roofing company rarely keeps a LinkedIn profile, so lists for SMB outbound get built from Google Maps, local listings and compiled business directories.

Below is the pipeline OneGTM runs for local lists, then the Maps scrapers, compiled databases and listing APIs worth knowing, with what each vendor publishes about price. The source of the list is the cheap step. Finding a named owner with a working email or mobile is where most of the cost and most of the reply rate sits, so we cover that and the compliance rules at the end. For geocoding and POI APIs, see our guide to [location data APIs](https://getaob.com/location-data-apis).

Key takeaways

- Google Maps is the most complete free-to-see source of local businesses. Apify, Outscraper and Scrap.io scrape it from about $1 to $3 per 1,000 places.
- We find places cheaply with Serper's Maps search, rank them, and pay a full Apify scrape only for the ones worth calling.
- Openmart sells local business records with owner emails and phones on credits. Data Axle and InfobelPRO sell compiled databases on contract.
- Maps gives you the business. The owner's name, email and mobile come from the website, state registries and enrichment through Deepline and LeadMagic.
- Scraping Google Maps breaks Google's terms, and calling owner mobiles falls under the TCPA and Do Not Call rules.

## What OneGTM uses to build local lists

Our local list pipeline has four steps: discover places with Serper, rank them on the fields Serper returns, scrape full details from Google Maps through Apify only for the top places we do not already hold, then find the owner and their contact details. Running discovery first cut the paid scrape to the places that score well, and every Apify run carries a hard spend cap.

### [Apify Google Maps Scraper](https://apify.com/compass/crawler-google-places?fpr=onegtm&utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

OneGTM uses this

The compass/crawler-google-places actor scrapes Google Maps search results inside a radius or polygon and returns name, category, place ID, address, coordinates, phone, website, rating, review count, hours and closed flags. Add-ons pull emails and social links from the business website and staff leads. In our runs it cost about $9 per 1,000 places with details and contacts, and about $12 with staff leads added.

**Best for:** Full Google Maps records for every business in an area

**Pricing:** Pay per event, from $1.50 per 1,000 places. Place details and website contacts each add $1.50 to $2 per 1,000 places, reviews $0.37 to $0.50 per 1,000, depending on your Apify plan. Apify's free plan includes $5 of usage a month.

### [Serper](https://serper.dev/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

OneGTM uses this

Google search API with Maps and Places endpoints that return name, address, coordinates, rating, category, website, phone and place ID. We use it to discover every candidate place in a market cheaply before deciding which ones deserve a full scrape, and to look up one business by name. A Maps results page costs 3 credits in our usage.

**Best for:** Cheap discovery and single-business lookups

**Pricing:** 2,500 free queries. Prepaid packs from $50 for 50,000 credits ($1.00 per 1,000) down to $0.30 per 1,000 at 12.5M. Credits expire after six months.

### [Openmart](https://www.openmart.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Local business database covering 50M+ businesses with search by category and location, an API, and an owner finder that returns owner emails and phones. We call it through Deepline as one step in the owner contact waterfall.

**Best for:** Owner contacts for local businesses

**Pricing:** Free with 200 credits and 50 searches a month. Starter $149/month ($105 billed annually) with 5,000 credits; Pro $299/month ($209 billed annually) with 10,000 credits; Enterprise custom. An owner email is 3 credits and an owner phone 8 credits.

### [Deepline](https://deepline.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

OneGTM uses this

Enrichment layer that runs the Apify, Serper, Openmart and LeadMagic calls behind one API and CLI, with bring-your-own keys, so a local list goes from places to owners with emails in one pipeline. See our [data enrichment tools](https://getaob.com/data-enrichment-tools) guide for the wider category.

**Best for:** Running the whole local list waterfall in one place

**Pricing:** Pay as you go at $0.10 per credit with no platform fee.

### [LeadMagic](https://go.leadmagic.io/garrett-wolfe?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

OneGTM uses this

Email finder, mobile finder and email validation. Once you have the owner's name and the business domain, it finds and validates the work email. Failed lookups cost nothing.

**Best for:** Owner emails once you have a name and a domain

**Pricing:** Essential $99/month for 5,000 credits; Growth $249/month for 20,000; Professional $499/month; Ultimate $849/month. A found email is 1 credit and a mobile 5 credits. About 16% less billed annually. No free plan.

## Google Maps scrapers and SERP APIs

These pull the same Google Maps listings with less setup than Apify, at the price of less control over the query. Each returns businesses, not people, so plan an enrichment step after.

### [Outscraper](https://outscraper.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Hosted Google Maps scraper with an app and an API, plus a separate Emails and Contacts scraper that crawls each business website. You pay per record with no subscription.

**Best for:** One-off Maps exports without writing code

**Pricing:** Google Maps Scraper free for the first 500 places, then $3 per 1,000 up to 100,000 and $1 per 1,000 after. Emails and Contacts Scraper free for 500, then $3 per 1,000 domains and $1 per 1,000 above 100,000.

### [SerpApi](https://serpapi.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Search results API covering Google Maps, Google Local and dozens of other engines. Its Google Maps API returns ratings, hours, phone and place ID for each result.

**Best for:** Developers who already use SerpApi for other engines

**Pricing:** Free 250 searches a month; Developer $75/month for 5,000 searches; Production $150/month for 15,000.

### [Scrap.io](https://scrap.io/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Google Maps export tool that searches by city, county, state or whole country, with radius and polygon search on higher plans, file enrichment and API access. Each place counts once per 30 days against your export credits.

**Best for:** Country or state-wide Maps exports on a flat monthly fee

**Pricing:** Basic $49/month (10,000 exports), Professional $99 (20,000), Agency $199 (40,000), Company $499 (100,000). Yearly billing $35, $69, $139 and $350 a month.

### [D7 Lead Finder](https://d7leadfinder.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Search by business category and city to get up to 1,200 businesses per search with emails, website, address, phone, social links, review scores and ad pixel data. Free basic use without export.

**Best for:** Quick category and city lists for a small agency

**Pricing:** Prices were not shown on the public plan page when we checked. Plans are Starter (10 searches a day), Agency (30) and Professional (100).

## Compiled business databases

These vendors compile business records from registries, directories, phone books and calls, and sell them as lists or subscriptions. They cover businesses with no web presence that Maps misses, with SIC codes, employee counts and sales estimates. Freshness varies, so test a sample against Maps before you buy a big file.

### [Data Axle](https://www.data-axle.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

One of the oldest US business databases, sold through Data Axle Genie (formerly Salesgenie) and APIs, with filters by ZIP, industry, title, sales volume and credit rating. Strong for direct mail lists to small businesses.

**Best for:** US SMB lists for direct mail and phone

**Pricing:** Custom pricing.

### [InfobelPRO](https://www.infobelpro.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Global company database built from 1,100+ local and global sources, with firmographics and points of interest across 200+ countries. Useful when the list spans markets outside the US.

**Best for:** Local business lists outside the US

**Pricing:** Custom pricing.

### [D&B Hoovers](https://www.dnb.com/en-us/products/dnb-hoovers.html?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Dun & Bradstreet's sales database with company and contact data, trigger events and buying signals, keyed on the D-U-N-S number. Covers small businesses that hold a D-U-N-S, and adds an MCP connection for AI tools.

**Best for:** Teams that need D-U-N-S matching and credit data

**Pricing:** Custom pricing; free trial on request.

### [LeadsPlease](https://www.leadsplease.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Self-serve US business mailing and email lists from 30M+ businesses, filtered by SIC industry and geography, with the exact price shown in a free count tool before you buy.

**Best for:** A small one-time mailing list with a known price

**Pricing:** Business lists from $124.95 for 500 records ($0.25 each) to $2,500 for 25,000 ($0.10 each) for direct mail; with email, $299.95 for 500 to $5,500 for 25,000.

## Official listing APIs

These are licensed APIs with clear terms, built to show listings inside an app. Display and storage rules make them a poor fit for exporting a lead list, but they are the clean way to look up or verify one business.

### [Yelp Places API](https://business.yelp.com/data/products/places-api/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Yelp's business search and details API (formerly Yelp Fusion) with categories, ratings, reviews, hours and photos. Strong on restaurants and consumer services.

**Best for:** Restaurant and consumer service lookups

**Pricing:** Base $229/month, Enhanced $299/month, Premium $643/month, with overage from $5.91 to $14.13 per 1,000 calls. 30-day trial with 5,000 free calls.

### [Foursquare Places API](https://foursquare.com/?utm_source=onegtm&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=local-business-data)

Place search and details on Foursquare's POI database, plus a free open source places dataset (FSQ OS Places). Thinner than Google on small service businesses, stronger on venues.

**Best for:** A licensed alternative to scraping Maps

**Pricing:** Pro endpoints free for 500 calls, then $15 per 1,000 down to $9 above 500,000. Premium endpoints from $18.75 per 1,000.

Prices are from each vendor's site as of October 2026 and change often, so check before you buy. This is an opinionated list, not a paid ranking. Some links are referral links that may earn us a credit; that never changes what you pay or who makes the list.

## How to build a local business lead list

Build a local list as a pipeline. This is the order we run it in, and each step only touches the records that survived the step before.

Size the market first. Count businesses of your type per county or metro with our [TAM calculator](https://getaob.com/tam-calculator) before you pay for anything.

- Discover: run every category and synonym through Serper Maps across a grid of circles that covers each market. Cache every page.
- Rank: score places on the fields you already have (category, review count, rating, website present) and drop chains, franchises and off-category results.
- Scrape: send only the top places you do not already hold to the Apify Google Maps actor by place ID, with a spend cap on every run.
- Read the website: crawl each business site for the owner's name, staff, services and contact page. Our [web scraping tools](https://getaob.com/web-scraping-tools) guide covers the options.
- Find the owner: check state license and business registries, then Openmart's owner finder.
- Get contacts: run name plus domain through an [email finder](https://getaob.com/email-finder-tools) such as LeadMagic, and a [phone number finder](https://getaob.com/phone-number-finder-tools) for mobiles, then validate every email.

## Data freshness and compliance

Small businesses open, close, move and change owners faster than any database refreshes. Google Maps flags permanently and temporarily closed places, so drop those first. A compiled file bought six months ago will hold a share of closed businesses and dead phone numbers. Check that the website still loads and that the place has recent reviews before a record reaches a rep.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Google Maps Platform terms forbid scraping or bulk exporting Google Maps content, and Google's general terms restrict automated access. Third-party scrapers collect publicly visible listings, but the account and legal risk of using that data sits with you. Licensed sources (the Places API, Yelp, Foursquare, Data Axle, Openmart) avoid that question at a higher price.

Calling is the stricter channel. Under the TCPA, autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to a mobile number need prior express consent, and many small business owners list a personal mobile as the business line. Scrub numbers against the National Do Not Call Registry and state lists before a dialer touches them. Cold email to US businesses falls under CAN-SPAM, which requires a working opt-out and a physical address, and email to EU or UK sole traders falls under GDPR and PECR.

- Drop places flagged closed and re-check websites before every campaign.
- Keep the place ID on each record so refreshes update rows instead of duplicating them.
- Scrub phone lists against the federal and state Do Not Call lists.
- Dial owner mobiles manually unless you have consent for automated calls.
- Honor an opt-out on every channel you run.

## Maps scraper or compiled database?

Scrape Maps when the businesses you sell to have a storefront or show up in local search: trades, gyms, clinics, salons, restaurants. You get fresh listings with reviews and websites at a few dollars per 1,000.

Buy a compiled database when you need businesses with no web presence, US SIC codes and sales estimates for mail, or coverage across many countries. Expect contracts and a sample check before you trust the file.

For outbound, most of the value comes after either source: a named owner with a validated email. Budget more for that step than for the list.

## When to get help

Exporting a Maps list takes an hour. Turning it into owners with working emails and phones, without paying to scrape places you will never call, takes a pipeline with caching, ranking and spend caps.

OneGTM builds local business lists end to end: discovery, ranking, scraping, owner research and contact enrichment, with the cost per record measured on a pilot before it runs at scale. You own the code and the data.

- You sell to SMBs that are not on LinkedIn.
- Your Maps export has businesses but no owner names or emails.
- You bought a list and a large share of the phones are dead.
- You need every business of a type across dozens of markets, refreshed monthly.

## Local business data FAQ

### Where can I get local business data?

The most complete source is Google Maps, scraped with the Apify Google Maps actor, Outscraper, Scrap.io or SerpApi. Openmart sells local business records with owner contacts, Data Axle and InfobelPRO sell compiled business databases, and Yelp and Foursquare offer licensed listing APIs. OneGTM uses Serper and Apify for places and Openmart, Deepline and LeadMagic for owners.

### How do I build a lead list of local businesses?

Discover every business of your type in each market from Google Maps, rank them on reviews, category and website, scrape full details only for the top ones, then find the owner from the website and state registries and enrich their email and mobile with a tool like LeadMagic. Validate emails before sending.

### Is it legal to scrape Google Maps?

Scraping Google Maps breaks Google's terms of service, though the listings are publicly visible and many vendors sell scraped Maps data. The risk of using it sits with you. The licensed route is the Google Places API, which limits what you may store. This is not legal advice.

### How much does a Google Maps scraper cost?

The Apify Google Maps actor starts at $1.50 per 1,000 places plus add-ons for details and contacts, Outscraper is free for 500 places then $3 per 1,000, and Scrap.io runs from $49 a month for 10,000 exports. We measured about $9 per 1,000 places on Apify with details and contacts, and about $12 with staff leads added.

### How do I find the owner of a small business and their email?

Check the business website's about and contact pages, then state license and business registries, then an owner finder such as Openmart. With a name and the business domain, an email finder like LeadMagic returns and validates the email. Many owners use a personal Gmail, so expect some gaps.

### Can I cold call phone numbers from Google Maps?

Business landlines are generally fine to call manually, but many small business owners list a personal mobile, and the TCPA requires prior express consent for autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to mobiles. Scrub against the National Do Not Call Registry and dial manually unless you have consent.

### How fresh is local business data?

Google Maps is the freshest common source because owners and customers update it constantly, and it flags closed places. Compiled databases such as Data Axle refresh on a cycle and carry more closed businesses and dead numbers. Re-check websites and closed flags before every campaign.

Selling to local businesses and need a list with owners, not just storefronts?
