## GTM terms, A to Z

Jump to: A B C D F G I L M O P R S T W

### A

ABM (account-based marketing)

A go-to-market approach that picks a defined list of target accounts first, then coordinates marketing and sales effort on those accounts instead of casting a wide net. It works best when deal sizes justify the extra research per account. [Demand generation](https://getaob.com/demand-generation-agency)

AI SDR

Software that uses large language models to handle parts of the SDR job, such as account research, writing first drafts of outreach, or answering replies. Most teams get better results using it to support reps than to replace them. [AI sales automation](https://getaob.com/ai-sales-automation)

Attribution

The practice of crediting pipeline and revenue back to the channels and touches that produced them. First touch credits the channel that found the buyer, last touch credits the one right before conversion, and multi-touch models split credit across the path. [Demand generation](https://getaob.com/demand-generation-agency)

### B

Buying committee

The group of people at a target account who influence or sign off on a purchase. In B2B deals this usually spans an economic buyer, the people who will use the product, and someone who can block the deal, such as security or finance.

Buying signal

An observable event that suggests an account is more likely to buy now, such as a relevant job posting, a funding round, a new executive hire, a tech stack change, or repeat visits to your pricing page. Signal-based outbound reaches out because of the signal. [Signal-based outbound](https://getaob.com/outbound-agency)

### C

Clay

A data enrichment and workflow platform that pulls from many data providers in one table, runs AI research steps, and pushes results to a CRM or sending tool. It is one of the most common tools in a GTM engineering stack. [Clay agency](https://getaob.com/clay-agency)

Claygent

Clay's built-in AI research agent. It browses the web to answer a question about each row, such as whether a company sells to enterprises or what product it launched last. [Clay pricing](https://getaob.com/clay-pricing)

CRM hygiene

Keeping CRM records accurate and usable: deduplicated accounts and contacts, consistent fields, correct ownership, and stale data refreshed. Bad hygiene breaks routing, reporting, and any automation that reads from the CRM. [RevOps agency](https://getaob.com/revops-agency)

### D

Data enrichment

Adding missing information to a company or contact record, such as headcount, industry, tech stack, work email, or phone number, usually by querying third-party data providers. [Clay agency](https://getaob.com/clay-agency)

Deliverability

Whether your emails reach the inbox instead of spam or nowhere at all. It depends on authentication records, sending reputation, list quality, volume, and the content itself. [Email deliverability checker](https://getaob.com/email-deliverability-checker)

Demand generation

Marketing that builds awareness and interest in a problem and your solution before buyers are ready to talk to sales, then captures that demand when they are. It is broader than lead generation, which focuses on collecting contact details. [Demand generation agency](https://getaob.com/demand-generation-agency)

DKIM

DomainKeys Identified Mail. A DNS record that lets your mail server sign outgoing email so receiving servers can verify it really came from your domain and was not altered in transit. [Check your DKIM](https://getaob.com/email-deliverability-checker)

DMARC

Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance. A DNS policy that tells receiving servers what to do with mail that fails SPF or DKIM checks (none, quarantine, or reject) and where to send reports. [Check your DMARC](https://getaob.com/email-deliverability-checker)

Domain warmup

Gradually increasing sending volume from a new domain or mailbox so inbox providers build trust in it before it carries real outbound volume. [Outbound agency](https://getaob.com/outbound-agency)

### F

Firmographics

Company-level attributes used to segment and target accounts, such as industry, headcount, revenue, location, and funding stage.

### G

Go-to-market (GTM)

The plan and the machinery a company uses to bring a product to buyers: who it sells to, how it reaches them, how it prices, and how marketing, sales, and customer success work together. [GTM consulting](https://getaob.com/gtm-consulting)

GTM engineer

A technical operator who builds the systems that find, score, and reach the right accounts: enrichment, signals, routing, and outbound and inbound automation wired into the CRM. [What is a GTM engineer?](https://getaob.com/gtm-engineer)

GTM engineering

The practice of building automated, data-driven revenue systems instead of scaling pipeline with manual work. It sits between RevOps, outbound, and growth. [GTM engineering agencies](https://getaob.com/gtm-engineering-agencies)

### I

ICP (ideal customer profile)

A description of the companies most likely to buy, get value, and stay, written as concrete, checkable attributes like industry, size, tech stack, and the situation that creates the need. [Grade your ICP with the GTM scorecard](https://getaob.com/gtm-scorecard)

Intent data

Signals that an account is researching a topic or category, gathered from your own site (first-party) or from third-party content networks and review sites. It is directional, so it works best combined with fit data. [Demand generation](https://getaob.com/demand-generation-agency)

### L

Lead generation

Producing contacts or conversations with potential buyers for sales to work, through outbound, paid, content, events, or partnerships. [Lead generation agency](https://getaob.com/lead-generation-agency)

Lead routing

The rules that decide which rep or queue gets a new lead or account, and how fast. Good routing considers territory, ownership, account tier, and existing relationships. [RevOps agency](https://getaob.com/revops-agency)

Lead scoring

Ranking leads or accounts by how well they fit your ICP and how engaged they are, so reps work the best ones first. [RevOps agency](https://getaob.com/revops-agency)

### M

MQL (marketing qualified lead)

A lead that marketing judges ready for sales follow-up, usually based on fit plus engagement such as a form fill or repeat visits. Definitions vary a lot between companies.

Multichannel sequence

A planned series of outreach steps across channels, typically email, LinkedIn, and phone, timed over a few weeks and stopped when the prospect replies. [Outbound agency](https://getaob.com/outbound-agency)

### O

Outbound

Sales outreach the seller starts, such as cold email, LinkedIn messages, or calls, as opposed to inbound, where the buyer reaches out first. [Outbound agency](https://getaob.com/outbound-agency)

### P

Persona

A description of the individual buyer or user you sell to inside an ICP account: role, responsibilities, goals, and the problems your product solves for them.

Pipeline

The set of open sales opportunities and their stages and values. Pipeline coverage compares open pipeline to the revenue target for a period.

Pipeline velocity

How fast pipeline turns into revenue, commonly calculated as number of opportunities times win rate times average deal size, divided by the length of the sales cycle.

Product-led growth (PLG)

A go-to-market model where the product itself drives acquisition and expansion, through free trials or freemium plans, with sales stepping in for larger accounts.

### R

RevOps (revenue operations)

The function that runs the systems, data, and processes behind marketing, sales, and customer success: CRM, routing, forecasting, and reporting. [RevOps agency](https://getaob.com/revops-agency)

### S

SDR (sales development representative)

A rep who prospects and qualifies new opportunities, through outbound or by following up inbound leads, and books meetings for account executives. [Outbound agency](https://getaob.com/outbound-agency)

Sending infrastructure

The domains, mailboxes, and tools used to send cold email. Teams usually send from secondary domains so outbound volume does not put the main domain's reputation at risk. [Outbound agency](https://getaob.com/outbound-agency)

Speed to lead

The time between a buyer raising their hand, such as a demo request, and the first response from your team. Faster responses tend to convert better, which is why routing and scheduling get automated. [RevOps agency](https://getaob.com/revops-agency)

SPF

Sender Policy Framework. A DNS record listing the servers allowed to send email for your domain. SPF has a limit of 10 DNS lookups, and going over it makes the record fail. [Check your SPF](https://getaob.com/email-deliverability-checker)

SQL (sales qualified lead)

A lead that sales has accepted and confirmed as a real opportunity worth pursuing, typically after a discovery conversation.

### T

TAM (total addressable market)

In GTM work, the full list of accounts and contacts that match your ICP, built as an actual list you can score, prioritize, and reach, as well as a market-size number. [GTM consulting](https://getaob.com/gtm-consulting)

Technographics

Data about the software a company uses, such as its CRM, cloud provider, or analytics stack. Useful for targeting when your product integrates with or replaces a specific tool.

### W

Waterfall enrichment

Querying several data providers in sequence until one returns a result, such as a verified work email, so coverage goes up and you only pay for the providers you actually need. [Clay agency](https://getaob.com/clay-agency)

Website visitor identification

Tools that match anonymous website traffic to companies (and sometimes people) using IP and other data, so sales can follow up on accounts showing interest. [Demand generation](https://getaob.com/demand-generation-agency)

Win rate

The share of qualified opportunities that close as won over a period. Tracking it by segment and source shows where your GTM motion actually works.

## GTM glossary FAQ

### What does GTM stand for?

GTM stands for go-to-market: the plan and systems a company uses to bring a product to buyers, covering who it sells to, how it reaches them, pricing, and how marketing, sales, and customer success work together. In web analytics GTM can also mean Google Tag Manager, which is unrelated.

### What is the difference between GTM and RevOps?

GTM is the overall strategy and motion for reaching and winning customers. RevOps is the operations function that runs the systems, data, and processes behind that motion, like the CRM, routing, and reporting.

### What is the difference between an MQL and an SQL?

An MQL is a lead marketing considers ready for sales based on fit and engagement. An SQL is a lead sales has accepted as a real opportunity, usually after a discovery conversation.

### What is GTM engineering?

GTM engineering is the practice of building automated, data-driven revenue systems: enrichment, scoring, buying signals, routing, and outbound and inbound automation wired into the CRM, so pipeline grows without adding the same amount of headcount.
